BudsGunShop.com - What is the correct ring height?

I look at ring height a bit different than others. There are many variables that effect what is the perfect ring height for you in a particular situation. the shape of the stock and cheek rest height , the shape of your face, example I have a big head with wide set eyes when mounting a rifle to my shoulder I want the rings to set the centerline of the scope the same distance above the bore as my natural line of sight so that I get an instant picture through the scope when mounting the rifle to my shoulder and don't have to adjust my head to see through the scope. Also there is the factor of how far you are generally planing to shoot as in range of target. Having a high mount on your scope is better if your shooting 600 yards or more or for increasing point blank range sighting for your rifle where as if you hunting in the woods and expect most of your shooting to be 300 yards or less (which is most often the case) as few folks have the disapline for really long range shooting, a lower scope mount is more useful. As I have a large head and like having backup sights I usually mount my scope on a picatinny rail with see through sight bases so if for some reason I can't see though my scope with just a slight twist of my head I can use the open sights. The most important thing is to set you scope and you gun up to fit you and your stile of hunting or shooting.

With 40mm bell you should be fine with medium height mounts. General accuracy rule, in my experience, has been shortest rings that get the bell above the hanguard, barrel, etc. Accuracy is good, the only drawback is you may catch "mirages" off the hot barrel. Safe shooting.

I've read the P-series includes the reversible/adjustable rings with the scope. If this is the case, height shouldn't matter. You will be able to set it wherever you need to with the rings included. Unless Nikon has a cheaper P-series I'm not aware of that doesn't include them?

Yes medium mounts will work as long as there are no sights in the way, otherwise get the high mounts. Hope this helps.
