This 308 has a balanced and substantial feel. After one trip to an outdoor range this gun has proven to be a solid performer. No jams, no misfires, smooth feeding. You can feel the power when you pull the trigger. The muzzle brake decreases the "kick" to a fairly low level. Expect muzzle rise when firing several rounds in quick succession. The 308 ammo is not shy about letting your ears know they are serious rounds. I wear both ear plugs and ear phones like I did on USAF flightlines - it works. In an ideal world, flip up iron sights would have been included but having an excuse to buy a scope was not a bad thing.

I have always wanted an AR-10 style rifle in .308, but was dissuaded from buying one due to the size/weight and price. When I discovered that Ruger had made one that was virtually the same size and weight as an AR-15, and Bud's sells them for about $1000; I had to order one. After receiving the SFAR I broke it down and cleaned it, lightly re-oiling the BCG and other moving parts prior to firing. I installed an optic and took it to the range. I kept the gas regulator on setting "3" as per the recommended break-in period instructions, and shot quality factory ammo. I won't bore you with all the details, but suffice it to say that it worked flawlessly for about 10-12 rounds. But then I started to experience FTF/FTE issues on every shot afterwards. Before I could diagnose the issue, the bolt stuck about 3/4 closed on a round. I didn't know at the time if it was a live round that didn't go into battery, or a fired round that didn't eject, so I took it home where I could safely remove it (it was a fired round). A few days later I took it back to the range and performed some 1-round mag tests. The gun seemed over-gassed on setting "3", so I reduced it to setting "2" even though I had not completed the recommended 200-300 round break-in. The first shot ejected at about the 3 o'clock position, but literally fell out the receiver about a foot away; I believe this was NOT an ammo issue because the recoil was the same and it sounded the same as the other rounds plus it hit the 100 yard target in the same place as other rounds. But after that, the rifle started functioning right, and I had only one minor hiccup (a double feed) in the next 40 rounds. The rounds were ejecting at about the 3:30 - 4:o'clock range and 8-10 feet away. I felt much better about the rifle after that. I rated it at 4-stars because I think, based on my own experience and doing some research online, that Ruger needs to do a little more work on the gas system on the SFAR. However, these issues seem very fixable and, even if you have to install an aftermarket gas block or buffer spring, you still have a very good, lightweight AR-10 for less that $1500. I have seen videos where the gas block or gas key was very loose from the factory, but mine seems to be properly installed. Hats off to Ruger for FINALLY making an affordable AR-10 that is small and lightweight!

Excellent semiautomatic rifle! Very lightweight, but kicks fairly gently due to the large muzzle brake. It comes heavily oiled, be sure to wipe up the excess before sighting it in. Eats Remington 150 and Winchester 180 grain ammo just fine. This will become my go-to wild hog hunting rifle.

Great .308 rifle. Make sure you leave on gas setting three during break-in. Best value on a light weight .308 ar style rifle. Muzzle brake will rock anyone next you but does a good job taming recoil. Have had one failure to eject on setting 2 during the first 20 rnds changed it to 3 for the first 150 rnds and haven’t had an issue since.

Can’t believe it it’s same size and weigh as an ar-15. The only thing I noticed was changing handle is harder to pull back on 308. Only have a hundred rounds with gun. Only ammo related issue with federal power shock rounds are squared off on tips and would get stuck.
